Approaching, an acrylic landscape painting by Douglas H. Caves Sr.

A Particular Place

More than a view. A painting with a memory behind it.

A meaningful landscape is rarely just a location. It may be the road home, a family property, a coastline you return to, or a quiet corner of New England that still holds a certain light. Doug builds commissions from that personal connection, translating reference material and conversation into a painting with its own life on the wall.

His work is shaped by the architecture, weather, and changing atmosphere of familiar places. The result is not a literal copy of a photograph, but an original painting that carries the mood you want to keep.

How It Comes Together

A clear, personal process from first note to finished work.

  1. 01

Tell the story of the place

Share the landscape, memory, or view you have in mind. Photographs are useful, but so are the details that a camera misses: weather, time of day, season, and why the place matters.

  2. 02

Set the work in its future home

Talk through size, palette, and where the painting will live. A quick room photo and wall measurements help Doug shape a work with the right visual weight.

  3. 03

    Make room for the painting

Once the direction is agreed, the painting develops in Doug’s studio. The finished work is a one-of-a-kind response to the place and the life you want it to have at home.

The Right Starting Point

Bring the details that make the place yours.

You do not need to arrive with a finished brief. A few photographs, the approximate wall size, and an honest description of what you want to feel when you look at the painting are enough to begin a useful conversation.

Questions, Answered

Before you get in touch.

What can a commissioned landscape painting be based on?

A commission can begin with a remembered place, a family home, a favourite view, a stretch of coast, or a landscape that has personal meaning. Doug uses conversation and reference material to understand what matters most about the place.

Do I need a perfect photograph?

No. Helpful photographs are welcome, but the important starting point is the feeling, season, light, and point of view you want the painting to hold. Doug can work from a group of images and a conversation about the memory behind them.

Can we discuss size and colour before I decide?

Yes. Size, palette, and placement are part of the early conversation. Sharing a photo of the intended wall and its approximate dimensions helps shape a work that has the right presence in the room.

How do I begin?

Send the studio a note with the place or idea you have in mind, along with any photographs, room details, and timing considerations. Doug will respond personally to begin the conversation.
